Maybe the almond-toe ballet flat is too traditional for you, and you like an edgier pointed style – or if you’re like me you just can’t get enough vegan flats in your shoe cupboard! From girly sugary pinks and vanilla shades, to sophisticated blacks in vegan suede, to punkier styles with straps and buckles – there’s a diverse choice out there for those like to keep it flat.
The Point Vegan Flats in Red Camo by Rothys (feature image)
Available in 18 – count ‘em – different colours, The Point is one of three signature styles by San Francisco-based footwear company Rothys (all vegan flats – they also do a round-toed ballet flat and a loafer). Stephen and Roth, the brand’s co-founders, realized something was missing from the footwear market – whilst sustainability was growing in importance it wasn’t yet stylish, and style and comfort rarely co-existed. So they set out to create the most stylish, comfortable shoe for today’s on-the-go woman, using low-waste, low-impact materials, hand-assembled for high quality and durability. Rothys use a yarn made from recycled plastic water bottles for all their shoes, which has the added benefit that they’re fully machine-washable (on a cold, gentle cycle). These vegan flats will take you from your early morning yoga class right through to cocktail hour, with work in between – although you may not be able to resist having a few in different colours!
Mary-Jane Vegan Flats in Black by Beyond Skin
This vintage Mary-Jane style is from British brand Beyond Skin, and is made of Italian faux leather with an adjustable buckle, with a breathable faux leather lining and resin sole. The brand was founded in 2001, when there were simply no gorgeous vegan shoes to be found anywhere (thankfully we’ve left those dark days behind) and is one of the more established vegan brands out there. Beyond Skin continues to expand its collection, including more sustainable and ethical materials each season in its Essentials category, and growing its line of luxury vegan shoes. The team also aim to enter the world of accessories, and have started to plan their menswear range for the future. World dominance should come shortly after that.
Maya Kitten Heels in Navy by Veerah
This retro-chic kitten heel with an asymmetrical low V-cut vamp is crafted from soft supple vegan leather, and was inspired by the spirit of the ground-breaking American poet, writer and civil activist Maya Angelou (that should tell you something about this brand!). It comes with a detachable reversible ankle strap – which instantly vamps up your look – which can also be worn as a bracelet. The brand’s name Veerah is derived from the word for warrior in Sanskrit – they describe themselves as a mission-driven luxury shoe company founded for women to make a positive impact as they conquer the world in impeccable style. Their motto is “Do Good. Look Incredible.” They put their money where their mouth is too – at least 1% of sale proceeds are directly contributed to social impact causes; all Veerah employees get 10 paid hours per month to volunteer and take self-improvement courses; and for every 100 customer interviews they conduct, they sponsor a one-year scholarship for a She’s The First girl scholar. Incredible indeed.
Evanna Pinatex Vegan Flats in Silver by Bourgeois Boheme
Handcrafted in Portugal, the Evanna pointed flat is an asymmetrical take on the ballerina, with a tapered toe and suede strap. It comes in two colours – this silver Pinatex grey suede, plus a black vegan leather / black suede option. It also has a cork insole, and a breathable seed-based bio-polyoils lining. Founded in 2005 by foot care specialist Alicia Lai, Bourgeois Boheme has developed from an online marketplace for vegan fashion accessories into a high-end vegan footwear brand with a small design-led collection. The brand’s name represents ‘unconventional sophistication’, whilst the lotus flower in the logo reflects their ethos – traditionally a significant symbol in Buddhist culture, it represents purity, beauty, love, compassion and awakening.
Lioness Embroidered Vegan Flats in Black by Beyond Skin
Oh my, how cute are these slipper shoes by Beyond Skin? These gorgeous vegan flats with a gold embroidered cat face have earned them another place in the Top Five – but really, it was hard to choose just two, as they probably have the best collection out there, including a more classic plain vegan suede pointed flat in navy and black, alongside patent pink and cream colourways. This style would definitely turn some heads – for feisty felines everywhere.
