High-heeled or flat, pointy or round, neutral or bright, vegan sandals come in all shapes and colours, and there’s definitely something for everyone. All of the styles chosen below work well for both daytime and evening wear, and would look great with a variety of outfits, from light summer dresses to smart shorts to cotton capri pants. Long may this glorious summer we’re having in the UK continue – but even if it doesn’t, you can always take the sun with you into Autumn with one of these beautiful sandals.
Louri Orange Heeled Vegan Sandals by Collection & Co (feature image)
Bristol-based vegan footwear and accessories brand Collection & Co was founded in 2016, with the aim of producing fashion-forward shoes without using animal leathers or glues. Their fashion credentials show – their styles are always perfectly on trend – but manage to be classic too, like these beautiful strappy block heels which have a nod to the Sixties too. These Louri vegan sandals are set on a comfortable 11.5cm block heel, are crafted in soft orange faux suede, and cushioned with extra padding on the insole for extra comfort. I imagine myself wearing these with nothing more than a high-legged bathing suit whilst lounging by the pool with a large cocktail (in my dreams). A more realistic scenario, however, would pair these with a chic linen shift dress, playing on that Sixties vibe.
Miley Pinatex Block Heeled Vegan Sandals in Silver by Bourgeois Boheme
Founded in 2005 by foot-care specialist (and long-time vegan) Alicia Lai, Bourgeois Boheme has developed from an online marketplace for vegan fashion accessories into a high-end vegan footwear brand with a small design-led collection. They may be small but they’re well established, with a celebrity following that includes Natalie Portman and Bryan Adams. The brand’s name represents ‘unconventional sophistication’, whilst the lotus flower in the logo reflects their ethos – traditionally a significant symbol in Buddhist culture, it represents purity, beauty, love, compassion and awakening. All their shoes are handmade in Portugal, using the most innovative, eco-friendly and vegan materials, including Pinatex (made from pineapple leaf libre) which is used for these Miley mid-heeled vegan sandals; and seed-based bio-polyoils, which are used to create a breathable lining. Plants are the answer.
Elysa Low Heeled Vegan Sandals in Sky by Matt & Nat
Matt & Nat are one of the most established vegan brands (they were founded in 1995 in Montreal), with dedicated stores in their native Canada, and resellers all over the world. Their motto is “Live beautifully” – which for them also means putting animal and environmental welfare at the heart of how they operate. They have a strong sustainability focus, experimenting with different recycled materials such as nylons, cardboard, rubber and cork; and since 2007, all their linings have been made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. These Elysa vegan sandals are available in a few other colours, and with a 2.5 inch heel, they’re great if you want a comfy casual sandal that still has a little bit of height and smartness.
Valentine Criss-Cross Vegan Sandals in Gold by Golden Ponies
Golden Ponies was founded in November 2008, and is based in Guadalajara, in México. They started by selling through an Etsy shop (which is still running) and have since launched their own website, offering worldwide shipping. They make made-to-order vegan bags and shoes at incredibly affordable prices (like, really), and everything is designed and produced in their local region, by family-owned factories. If you can’t find the colour you want they even have a custom colour-choosing service. They have a large variety of styles, all made with faux leather and well-sourced vegan materials. My favourites are their Poppy strappy mules (which come in delectable ice-cream parlour shades) and these Valentine vegan sandals (which also come in silver). I would pair these with a navy jumpsuit and feel like the bees knees.
Sansa Silver Strappy Vegan Sandals in Silver by Beyond Skin
Beyond Skin was born in 2001, at a time when it seemed impossible to be both stylish and cruelty-free – so the brand’s founders set out on a mission to bring style and quality to those who cared. Originally made in the UK (where at one point they used a fetish-shoe manufacturer to produce their lines), all their collection is now made in sunny Spain, and they have one of the biggest collections of 100% vegan shoes out there, with every style imaginable, from knee-high boots to strappy sandals like this glamorous Sansa style. They’ve had celebrity ambassadors (Natalie Portman and Miley Cyrus are fans); been featured in Vogue, Elle, Grazia and many more; and have won a bunch of awards over the years. They continue to expand their collection, including more sustainable and ethical materials each season in their Essentials category, and growing their line of luxury vegan shoes. The team also aim to enter the world of accessories, and have started to plan their menswear range for the future.
