Historically seen as vampy, now red nails can be super sophisticated, or cheeky and youthful, or anything in between. Whilst there are sooo many shades of vegan nail polishes, from bright zesty orange-reds to dark sultry burgundies, this list just focuses on the classic mid red nail polish which every girl is likely to want to have in her collection, as perhaps surprisingly it goes with almost everything. All these brands are of course cruelty-free and vegan, but also make pains to avoid the usual plethora of nasties that you often see in high-street brands (e.g. parabens, sulfates, formaldehyde). Full details on each brand’s website.
Vegan Nail Polish in Sarang by Aila Cosmetics (feature image)
Sarang (pronounced suh-wrong) means ‘love’ in Korean – if you take a look at the Aila collection you’ll see that all their vegan nail polishes have really cute names, often highly personal to the brand’s founder, Dr Cary Gannon. A board-certified US Podiatric Surgeon, she had been prompted to make health changes in her own life, having lived through a rare disease, the raising of two children, managing a surgical career and enduring a painful divorce; and wanted to inspire other women also suffering what she has termed ‘chronic over-functioning.’ After discovering the disturbing, hidden truth behind the making of many of the products in her industry, she started Aila, a high-end nail system that protects the nail and enhances nail health. As an example, Aila’s nail primer is infused with garlic, which has been touted for centuries as having significant nail strengthening and anti-fungal properties. So while your nails are looking pretty, you know you’re looking after them properly too.
L’Oxygene Nail Polish in Rouge by Nailberry
This gorgeous bright red vegan nail polish comes from the multi award-winning L’Oxygene range from British brand Nailberry, a breathable and oxygenated formulation that uses patented technology to deliver a healthier manicure. Nailberry was founded in 2012, starting life as a luxury nail bar in London’s Chelsea. It’s founder Sonia noticed that her customers were continuing to experience dry and damaged nails, so she went about developing her own range of healthier, kinder vegan nail polishes, and the business swiftly transitioned into what it is today.
Patent Shine 10X Vegan Nail Polish in Her Majesty’s Red by Butter London
Her Majesty’s Red is a richly pigmented red vegan nail polish, and the Butter Patent Shine 10X formula contains ingredients such as bamboo extract, designed to promote brighter, stronger, healthier nails. Their patented Shock Resisting Polymer Technology delivers a gel-like finish and limitless shine with up to 10 days of wear – which beats a lot of other brands.
Despite being called Butter London, the brand is actually American – but was founded by British entrepreneur Sasha Muir in 2005, with the help of Nonie Creme, London’s premier fashion manicurist. They say they’re infinitely inspired (and a ‘lil obsessed) with rebellious British creativity and the allure of London in all its energizing, eclectic, eccentric, glamorous glory. Note – not all of the Butter range is vegan, but they state that all of this range (with a silver cap) is.
Vegan Nail Polish in Classic Red by Gabriel Cosmetics
US brand Gabriel Cosmetics doesn’t just do vegan nail polishes, but a whole range of skincare and beauty products, all vegan and natural-based (I’m a fan of their lipsticks too). Their vegan nail polish includes over 50 shades, comprising a core collection plus seasonal additions. Founded by Gabriel De Santino in 1992, the brand originated as a botanical skincare company drawing on Gabriel’s personal influences and childhood experiences of homeopathic skincare and cosmetics. Today, it’s grown into a beauty empire with the addition of Gabriel, Zuzu Luxe, and Clean Kids Naturally.
Vegan Nail Polish in Ruby by Maggie Ann
British brand Maggie Ann produces toxin-free vegan nail polishes, that are ultra glossy and with a gel-like finish. They have a pretty extensive colour range too, with over forty shades (I really like their Olive shade too). The gel formula and easy-to-apply brush means you can achieve a flawless manicure at home, with no streaks. It also has an acetone-free nail polish remover which is on my purchase list, as it comes in three different fragrances (Strawberry & Grape, Blueberry & Pomegranate and Lemon & Lime) – how gorgeous does that sound?
